Temporary accommodation between house moves: what to do with the gap
Chains break, completions move and renovations overrun. The result is the same: a household with no home for a few weeks or months, and a hotel bill that makes no sense for a family.
A furnished monthly let is the usual answer. Here is how to size and book one without paying for longer than you need.
Work out the realistic gap, then add two weeks
Whatever your solicitor or builder has told you, the gap is usually a little longer. Book to the realistic date with the ability to extend monthly rather than to the optimistic one, and you avoid the worst outcome, which is moving twice.
Stays of 28 nights and over are priced as monthly lets rather than nightly stays, which is significantly cheaper per night than short-stay pricing.
What a monthly furnished stay includes
Furniture, kitchen equipment, linen and towels, gas, electricity, water, council tax and broadband are all inside the quoted price. Nothing goes into your name and there is no tenancy referencing process or utility setup.
You get a whole house or apartment, not a room: a kitchen you can cook in, a washing machine, and space for the household to live normally while the move completes.
Storage, pets and parking
Most furniture goes to a removals storage unit for the gap, so bring what you need for the period rather than everything. Ask your removals company to quote storage and second delivery together — it is usually cheaper than arranging them separately.
Pets and parking both need agreeing before booking. Many of our homes have driveway parking and some accept pets, but it has to be confirmed on the specific property.
What it costs and what to have ready
Pricing depends on town, size and season, and is quoted as a monthly figure with bills included. Every booking takes a refundable security deposit, returned after checkout once the property has been checked.
To get a firm quote quickly, send the town or postcode you need to be in, your expected dates, how many adults and children, whether you drive, and whether you have pets.
Frequently asked
What do you do if your house sale completes before you can move in?
A furnished monthly let bridges the gap. Bills and council tax are included, there is no tenancy referencing, and the stay can extend month to month if completion moves again.
How much does a monthly stay cost compared with a hotel?
Stays of 28 nights or more are priced monthly rather than nightly, which is far cheaper per night than short stays — and a kitchen removes most of the eating-out cost a hotel adds.
Can I extend if my completion date moves again?
Yes, subject to availability. Tell us as early as you can and we will extend the same property rather than moving you.
